What an accredited course is and why it matters

Accredited courses are nationally recognised training products developed to meet industry or workforce needs not covered by existing training package qualifications. Once approved by ASQA, they are added to the National Training Register at training.gov.au with a unique national course code.

Accreditation allows the course owner to retain intellectual property and license delivery to RTOs. This makes accredited courses suitable where specialised or emerging training outcomes are required.

    How course accreditation works

ASQA requires accredited courses to follow a structured process. This includes confirming training need, designing the course and assessment framework, gathering industry consultation evidence, and submitting a full accreditation application. Once approved, the course is listed on the National Training Register and may be delivered by RTOs authorised by the course owner.

Why organisations choose to accredit a course

      Common Pitfalls

Understanding why things fail helps you avoid the same mistakes.

      • No suitable training product exists on training.gov.au
      • A nationally recognised qualification is required
      • The organisation wants to own the course and materials
      • Delivery rights need to be licensed to RTOs
      • Industry or workforce gaps must be addressed

Review current course structure and outcomes

      Confirm continued industry relevance

      Update consultation and evidence records

      Prepare renewal documentation

      Submit renewal application to ASQA

      Common Course Accreditation Failure Points

Where accreditation applications fail and how to prevent it.

Applications fail when they cannot demonstrate genuine industry or workforce demand for the proposed course.

      What we see

      • •No documented industry consultation
      • •Training need assertions without supporting evidence
      • •Overlap with existing training package qualifications
      • •Generic claims about market demand

      Why it matters

ASQA requires clear evidence that the course addresses a training need not met by existing products. Without this, accreditation will be refused.

      What to do instead

      • ✓Document comprehensive industry consultation before development
      • ✓Gather letters of support from employers and industry bodies
      • ✓Demonstrate gap analysis against existing training products
      • ✓Quantify workforce demand with data where possible
